To my colleagues
Cardiopulmonary exercise testing is a powerful and exciting
tool that has many uses in clinical medicine. The advent of
reliable oxygen and carbon dioxide sensors along with the
advances in computer technology have made the measurement
of oxygen uptake and CO2 production on a breath by breath
basis easily obtainable. Integrated Cardiopulmonary exercise
testing is the combination of these previously hard to measure
parameters with heart rate, EKG morphology, O2 saturation,
blood pressure, work rate, ventilation and arterial blood
gas measurements. It is this combination of simultaneously
measured parameters recorded during progressive exercise that
provides a unique and often diagnostic picture to explain
exercise intolerance or dyspnea on exertion.
Cardiopulmonary exercise testing does not replace any present
pulmonary testing or cardiac stress testing. It should be
used as a compliment to our present testing modalities when
the diagnosis or the treatment of dyspnea is still in question.
Cardiopulmonary exercise testing has been recognized by
the American College of Chest Physicians, American Thoracic
Society and the American Heart Association. I have included
reference material below.
We are happy to see patients on a referral basis for exercise
intolerance or dyspnea on exertion of unexplained etiology.
Patients have been referred by their primary physicians as
well as cardiologists and fellow pulmonologists. We look forward
to consulting on your patients.
